FAQs
What is a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)?
A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management of lactation. They have extensive knowledge and training in human lactation and are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
Do you provide services held within the scope of practice as a Registered Midwife (RM) while practicing as an IBCLC?
I am dually registered as a Registered Midwife (RM) and a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), however, while providing IBCLC services, I am not practicing within the Registered Midwife (RM) scope or role. While I may draw from my knowledge and experience as a Registered Midwife (RM), I work within the scope of practice of a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) which does not include prescribing medications or diagnosing any condition. I refer to other providers such as your general practitioner, paediatrician, midwife or other care provider as needed. This collaborative care model allows families to build confidence and feel supported through their feeding journey. I avoid conflicts of interest as I practice within both roles in various settings.
Why do I need a lactation consultant?
A lactation consultant can help with a variety of feeding issues, including latching difficulties, milk supply concerns, nipple soreness, managing back to work and/or pumping, and more. They also assist in navigating the adjustment to new parenthood or a growing family.
